Brainstorm a list of all the stories or nursery rhymes with Jack as the main character such as “Jack and the Beanstalk”; “Little Jack Horner”; “Jack and Jill” or “Jack Be Nimble.” Create a new story that includes elements from any or all of them. Begin with, “Once there was a boy named Jack who...” Have children add a detail from one Jack story. Then continue prompting with phrases such as, “And then Jack...,” or “After that happened, Jack....” Encourage original ideas as well. “So after he went up the hill he was tired and sat down to eat some ice cream.” Write the new story on chart paper and read it back to the children.  This could be done in large group.
