Encourage the children to look at similar shapes of different sizes. Place several cut-out shapes in a basket and have a child choose one – a square, for example. Encourage four to five children to go throughout the classroom and bring back items that are squares – a book, a unit block and a pattern block, for example. If the child finds a shape that is too big to bring back to the group area, have him stand beside his shape. Place the shapes on the rug and discuss the various sizes. Explain that “even though these are all different sizes, they are all still squares.” This could be done in large group.
