Before center time, explain to the children that there are no brushes to use for painting. Show them a variety of tools that will be available, such as straws, wooden ice cream spoons, craft sticks, sponges, clothespins and bath scrubbers, and encourage them to experiment with using them to paint in the art center. Once they have finished painting, have the children explain what materials they used and how they made them work “like a brush.”
