Games that require the children to compare and contrast make good problem-solving activities. Here's a fun one that the children really enjoy. Divide the children into groups of two and give each child a bell that you tap to ring. Remove the face cards from a deck of playing cards; shuffle and divide the remaining deck in half. Place each stack face down in front of a child. To play, the children turn over the top cards at the same time and compare them. The child with the highest value card rings the bell. Earlier in the year you may want the children to simply compare and decide if both the cards are the same number – then they both get to ring the bell together. This can be done in small group.
