AGE GROUP(S)48-60 months
Use the children's own artwork to help them focus on detail. Give each child an art piece they recently completed. First, ask them to tell one thing about their own picture – “It's a picture of my house,” or “I drew lots of flowers.” Next, ask them to say one thing about a classmate's picture. If they have trouble, prompt them by asking, “Can you tell us something about the colors in the painting?” or “Can you describe one thing you see in this part?” (point to a part of the picture). Pair the children and ask them to compare their pictures to each other. Ask, “Can you find one thing that is the same? One thing that is different?” Encourage them to answer in complete sentences rather than words or phrases.
