Before reading the story “The Little Red Hen,” use a variety of props to spark the children's curiosity. For example, bring in a loaf of unsliced bread and ask, “Do you know how this bread is made? Let's read a story about a little red hen and find out.” As you read the story, emphasize the sequence of events. Recap often. For example, say, “First she planted the seeds, then she watered them. What did she do next?” The children should answer, “She harvested the wheat.” Create pictures of the sequence. During small group time, ask the children to put the pictures in order.
