Have the children experiment with a variety of objects, noticing if they sink or float and comparing their characteristics. Make charts showing which sink and which float. Then, show the children a new object and ask them to predict if it will sink or float, based on prior observations. Ask, “What makes you think that?” Their answers should be based on prior knowledge. For example, one child might say, “It's a block and here (pointing to chart) blocks float.” This can be done in small group.
