Read Ten Little Fish by Audrey and Bruce Wood. Use felt fish or manipulative fish. Have the children take the fish away and interact with the story. Ask them questions as the story goes on such as, “How many fish are there now?” At the end of the story, ask the children how many they started with and have them retell the story using the fish and counting backwards.
