Hollow out half of a grapefruit or an orange and place it in a bowl of water.  Ask the children to guess how many counters, such as beans or paper clips, the fruit boat might hold before it sinks.  Continue the discussion by asking whether the way the counters are placed inside will matter.  Provide an opportunity for the children to place the counters in the boat.  Compare results with the children's guesses.
