Read Is It Living or Nonliving? by Rebecca Rissman. Talk about how you can tell if something is alive. Put two hula-hoops on the floor. Label one “Yes” and one “No.” Show the children pictures of various living and nonliving things such as an elephant, a rose, a toaster, a baby or a car. Ask, “Is it alive?” and have the children answer “Yes” or “No.” Then ask, “How do you know?” Finally, place the picture in the correct hoop.
