After introducing the children to the basic characteristics of living and nonliving things, use a large piece of butcher paper divided into two sections, “Living” and “Nonliving.” Have the children look through magazines and cut out pictures of living and nonliving things and put the pictures under the appropriate category. Challenge each child to explain why the picture belongs in its category. This can be done in small group.
