Read The Bag I'm Taking to Grandma's by Shirley Neitzel, about a small boy who fills a bag for a visit. Give each child a paper lunch bag and have them “fill it up” with items from the classroom. Ask each child to pick a different item – one child will fill his/her bag with blocks, another with doll clothes and so on. Count and compare the items in each bag. Will more markers fi t in the bag or more books? Then show the children a new item that none of them collected. Ask them to estimate how many of those items will fit using their collections as benchmarks. Fill the bags and check the estimate. This can be done in small group.
