K-W-L Chart

At the beginning of a theme of study, such as transportation, create a three-column chart and label the columns K (what we know), W (what we want to know) and L (what we learned). Encourage the children to brainstorm and describe what they know and what they want to know about the theme and write these on the chart. Throughout the theme return to the K-W-L chart and add what the children learned. This could be done in large group.
