For toddlers to learn words, they need to hear lots of words spoken every day. Snack timeand lunchtime are great opportunities to make this happen. Talk about the different foods the children are eating every day and label them. Use words like fruit, vegetable, protein and dairy. Ask the children to describe the foods they are eating: sweet, sour, salty, delicious, yucky. The children can also describe the ways the food looks: the meat is cut in slices, the pears are diced and the cheese is cut in chunks.
