Add clean soil and a small amount of water to a clean plate or pan for the infant to experience the feeling of mud. Place the infant at the table, and encourage the infant to explore with his/her hands. As the infant plays, use descriptive words such as cold, soft, wet and messy. Provide close supervision to prevent the infant from mouthing the soil.
