Explain to the children, “I am thinking of a number that describes how many feet a cat has. Can you tell me, Number Detectives?” The children would answer “four.” Be sure to include zero in your clues. “I'm thinking of a number that describes how many children are wearing bathing suits today.” You could also use examples that match real objects in the classroom. For example, “I see five of something in our class. Number Detectives, can you tell me what they are?” If necessary, offer clues such as, “These keep us dry in the rain” (five umbrellas). Switch places after the children seem to understand the game and have them create number questions. This could be done in large group.
