Provide a variety of different sizes of nuts and bolts. Encourage the children to screw the nuts on and off the bolts. Use a magnifying glass to examine the inside of the nut and the outside of the bolt. Show the children how the metal is formed in a spiral. Ask where they have seen this shape before: in a slide, on a sea shell, on a jar lid that twists on and off?
