Provide word cards, in the writing center, that list what animals need to live. Encourage children to choose a pet from dramatic play and then make a list of items they need to pick up at the store to take care of their pet. For example, under the title, “What Dogs Need,” list the following: food, water, bed, toys, house and bone. The children can practice writing on the paper you provide before they go to the store to pick up the items.
