Prepare paper plates with shapes drawn in different colors. During outdoor time, scatter the plates in a large area, making sure that all of the same shapes are not together. Explain to the children that they will walk around the area without stepping on the plates while you play music. When the music stops, the children stop moving. Call out a color and shape. For example, red triangle or green square. The children then find the nearest plate that shows the shape/color combination that you called and puts a foot on the plate. More than one child can step on each plate. Resume the music and children begin walking again. Repeat the process several times. Once the children are familiar with how the game works, have them take turns calling out the color and shape.
