Show the children a variety of timers, such as a sand timer, a stopwatch and a kitchen timer, and explain that these things let us know when time has gone by. Encourage the children to explore by turning the sand timers over and watching the sand or by turning the kitchen timer to hear it ding. After the children have played with the timers, set the kitchen timer for a short time and explain, "When this timer buzzes, it will be time for a story." When the timer goes off, gather the children on the rug for a story.
