Encourage the children to use gestures when engaging in pretend play on the playground. Set up a roadway for tricycles. Include a stop sign, as well as designated place for the traffic officer to stand. He/she can use hand signals to indicate stop (hand up, palm facing out), move forward (hand waving forward) or hold up colored paddles to indicate stop, go or slow down. Show the children on tricycles how to signal for a turn or when stopping.
