Provide a variety of writing tools, in the writing center, so that the children can notice differences in line width or color intensity. Talk about what kind of marker or crayon they would choose for different tasks. For example ask, “What marker would you need if you wanted to write on this little card?” or “What makes the darkest color – a colored pencil or a crayon?”
