Introduce the concept of dissolving. An easy way to describe it is to have children touch various solids such as corn starch, jello, salt, pepper and candied sprinkles. Discuss that some of these will change into a liquid when water is added. Place a chalkboard or dry erase board flat on a table. Place the solids on the board and ask children which ones they think might dissolve in water. Place a container in front of each package. Ask children to pour water into each container with a spoonful of each item. Provide spoons for children to stir the solution throughout the day. Review during another large group time and discuss what the children observed. This could be done in large group.
