Discuss the importance of clean drinking water. Pour each child a cup of water and give them a magnifying glass to look at the water closely. Explain to the children that sometimes there are pollutants in water that you cannot see and that water filters are used to clean water. Show the children a water filter and demonstrate how filters clean debris and chemicals from water. Use two clear jars, soil, sand, cheese cloth and a rubber band. Pour water and soil into a clear jar and stir. Using a rubber band, secure a piece of cheese cloth over a second, empty jar. Spread sand on the cheese cloth. Slowly pour the first jar over the sand, into the empty jar. Ask the children what they observe. Ask, “Why do you think the water is a little cleaner?” and “What do you think we can try to do to make it cleaner?” This could be done in small group.
